WordPress 2.3.2
This is for anyone wondering, should I or shouldn’t I?
This was an “Urgent Security Update”, so last night I upgraded only after reading John Chow’s article on this, and it went well. It didn’t seem to cause any problems, but if you see anything strange please let me know.
If you’re not using WP and have no idea what I’m talking about, please excuse the intrusion into your reader!

Curious, did you also use that plugin that backs things up for you? I would like to but I’m scared
Yes I did Mariam, but I didn’t need it. It went without a hitch! You can get the backup wordpress plugin here if that would help you not be scared.:D
Don’t be scared Mariam, updating wordpress is a necessity, as there are security problems and little niggles found all the time - updating is good.
I’d suggest backing up even if you have a small blog, just in case, and the automatic plugin is great for newbies.
I agree with Nick, it is fairly simple to do, and you should always backup whenever you do something to your blog. FTP was scary when I started out, but I quickly figured out what things to watch for, but now I just download the new files and upload over the old ones. I use File Zilla, (which is an FTP program) and the only thing I have to do is make sure that after sending the files over I look at what files didn’t make it, and get them there.
I’ve been worried about this, too.
Hi Chris,
Do you use FTP, or anther way of sending your files to your server? I wouldn’t have a problem with writing a post on the things I’ve had to learn about this, if that would help anyone.
Hi Scoot,
I do backup my website but my recent tar files have been corrupted when I try to untar. I’m afraid if all doesn’t go smoothly, I won’t have… uh, a backup.
I think I need to call my host provider…
mariam, you could just right click on your root file and download the whole works right into a folder on your desktop, for instance. This is the way I backup. Everything stays on the server but it sends an exact copy of the whole thing to your local machine. As far as tar files go I use 7-zip to untar. Is the program you use to untar things an old version, ie need to update? 7-zip is open source, so it’s free.
Thanks, I’ll give 7-zip a try or just ftp it to my desktop as suggested. I backed up using my cpanel but it didn’t work. I wonder if there’s already something corrupted with my site or if it’s just the tar file or the unzipper…
Good luck mariam. I hope that works for you. I think if there were anything wrong with your original files it would show up on your web site when you load it, and I haven’t noticed anything weird.
